The project
Greenforge is an innovative IT solution that supports participating educational institutions with up to about 700 € per month, while motivating students to collect and redeem selective bottle waste. The latter goals are achieved with bottle collection machines being placed in schools and with an IT system. The user identifies themselves with the QR code found in Greenforge's own mobile application – which can be also printed – before redeeming the bottles. After that, for every bottle thrown into the machine, the user receives points that they can spend in Greenforge's mobile or web application, or they can collect them together with other users - for example, alongside with students in their class - so that they can later redeem their accumulated points for some great reward. The institutions participating in the project receive the redemption fee for the bottles.
Greenforge is the work of three students learning software development and testing at the John von Neumann Institute of Information Technology BMSZC who want to help schools across the country maintain and renovate their buildings. Although the project itself was designed primarily for secondary and primary schools, it can also be perfectly applied at universities, healthcare institutions, or even other workplaces.
Monetary aid for schools
Based on our public opinion polls and data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, the project can donate around 11.9 million Euros a year, if we only count state-run primary and secondary schools.
These numbers were originally calculated in Hungarian Forints then were exchanged to Euros with the conversion rate of 380 HUF = 1 EUR.
Rewards
The Greenforge system includes rewards that can be obtained in exchange for points which were earned by throwing in bottles. These awards are registered in the system by the management of the project or by the participating institution. The rewards of the latter can only be accessed by users associated with the given organization. Let's say a class wants to go on a class trip to Visegrád. The students can collect points together for their class's common collective account, from which they can book accommodation and programs at a discount through the system.
